McCarthy and Rodgers Make Great Combination in Green Bay
It is hard to be humble in the NFL. However, if you are Mike McCarthy, the Green Bay Packers head coach it might not be so difficult.
McCarthy is content being the coach that is least talked about in the two conference championship games this weekend.
McCarthy is not colorful and does not exude vibes of ultra-positivity like his counterpart on Sunday Pete Carroll.
The Green Bay coach is not gruff or come off like a mad genius, as does Bill Belichick. McCarthy is not the inspirational storyline of Chuck Pagano, who successfully beat leukemia 24 months ago.
McCarthy is simply a head coach in his ninth season with the Packers, who has 101 wins, one Super Bowl victory and is coaching in the NFC Championship on Sunday.
It likely is no coincidence the most reclusive general manager in the NFL hired the a very private head coach and earlier drafted a quarterback that likes to maintain things very close to his vest.
Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers says he will someday write about all the different stories and anticdots he has accumulated during his time under coach McCarthy. Therefore, he claims he is not willing to share them with anyone just yet.
In his rookie season, Rodgers sat behind Brett Favre, and then when McCarthy arrived, Rodgers sat for two years longer.
The quarterback was then given his starting role at the beginning of the 2008 season. Of the current NFL head coach and quarterback duos, just Belichick and New England quarterback Tom Brady and Tom Coughlin and Giants quarterback Eli Manning have worked longer together than the Packers duo of McCarthy and Rodgers.
Rodgers said they are able to “get each other.†It is a relationship that is collaborative between a quarterback who is strong willed and his play caller.
When an occasional difference of opinion takes place on the Packers sideline, Rodgers said it helps make their relationship even stronger.
Rodgers said what is best about his relationship with McCarthy is that the two of them are always communicating.
He said if the two are not seeing eye to eye, they make sure to find a way to get there quickly.
McCarthy has a demeanor on the sideline that is calming to both players and coaches.
However, his players and coaches said he was overly excited on Sunday after defeating the Dallas Cowboys. When his coaches were asked what he did that had been so exciting, they paused and said McCarthy had congratulated his players and then smiled.
He and the rest of Green Bay hope to be smiling on Sunday after the NFC Championship Game they play at Seattle against the Seahawks.
