Reggie Bush Signs With San Francisco 49ers
For the first time since his college days, former Detroit Lions running back Reggie Bush will don the helmet and pads for a Californian team.
It has been a rough couple of weeks for the 49ers, with key players departing from all corners and rampant speculation than anyone who’s anyone is trade material, but the team and its fans finally have a little to be cheerful about. The fiscal details of Bush’s contract have yet to be disclosed, but the veteran back is set to play an exciting role in his new offense.
Both Kendall Hunter and Carlos Hyde should challenge Bush for the starting spot. And even if San Francisco’s newest weapon is relegated to reserve back, his still-prominent skills in the screen and short yardage game should make him a viable asset for Colin Kaepernick and a new-look offense designed around facilitating the mobile quarterback’s biggest strengths.
The signing of Bush is interesting for a much subtler reason, too. The move unites him with fresh recruit Jarryd Hayne; a two-time Australian Rugby League MVP whose sudden departure for the NFL last September made big waves down under.
It is widely believed that Hayne’s hidden desire to take a stab at the NFL flourished into reality when Bush visited Australia last season on promotional duties. While in Sydney, he attended a training session and endorsed the ‘Hayne Plane’ as a man who appeared to have the full package of a top-flight running back.
With the two ‘mates’ together in San Francisco, one would expect Hayne’s transition between sports to become a little easier, and maybe even give him the slight edge he needs to make the final roster. The plot will undoubtedly thicken come draft day, but for now, speculation is still king.
