Oakland Raiders release veteran QB Matt Schaub after one season
The Oakland Raiders weren’t ready to go with Fresno State’s Derek Carr right out of the gate last season until the rookie quarterback beat out veteran Matt Schaub in the preseason. Carr blew up in a game against the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks during the preseason and convinced the coaching staff he was ready to be the starter for Week 1.
Unfortunately for Schaub, Carr getting the start in Week 1 was the beginning of the end of the veteran’s short stint in Oakland. According to Bill Williamson of ESPN, Schaub was released by the Raiders on Monday:
The Matt Schaub experiment in Oakland came to a predictable end Monday when the Raiders cut the former starting quarterback.
Schaub threw only 10 passes for the Raiders, two of which were intercepted by opposing teams, and earned $8 million. The veteran quarterback’s future will now be up in the air moving forward with no telling where he might land.
As for the Raiders, the struggling franchise feels comfortable with their second-year quarterback heading into the 2015 NFL season. Carr had an impressive rookie season after the Raiders drafted the Fresno State product 36th overall in the 2015 NFL draft.
Carr played in all 16 games last season for the Raiders throwing for 3,270 yards, 21 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Even though the Raiders were only able to win three out of the 16 games played, the team took a massive step forward with Carr under center and fellow rookie Khalil Mack leading the defense.
With Schaub now off the depth chart, the Raiders will have Matt McGloin and the recently signed veteran Christian Ponder on their list of quarterbacks moving forward.
