All America Team Named in NCAA Football
The AP announced its NCAA All America team on Tuesday with three players repeating from last season.
Will Sutton a defensive tackle for Arizona State, Ka’Deem Carey a running back for Arizona and C.J. Mosley a linebacker for Alabama were selected to this year’s first team for the second consecutive season.
A panel of college football voters from the AP selected the team. Florida State’s Jameis Winston recently named the Heisman Trophy winner added to his great first season by being named All America.
Also making the first team were Heisman finalists Jordan Lynch of Northern Illinois and Andre Williams of Boston College.
Lynch, one of the most impressive dual threat quarterbacks in the nation was selected as the first team all-purpose player and Williams joins Carey as the top running backs.
Carey, just a junior, is the nation’s second leading rusher this season after leading the nation last year.
Senior linebacker Mosley was Alabama’s leading tackler. The Crimson Tide defense was No. 5 in the nation in yards allowed each game.
Senior defensive tackle Sutton was named the defensive player of the year for the Pac-12 for the second consecutive season.
Seminoles quarterback Winston is joined by three of his teammates from Florida State on the AP first team – Lamarcus Joyner a cornerback, Bryan Stork the center and Roberto Aguayo a kicker. The four Seminoles give top ranked Florida State more players on the first team than any other school.
Two Seminoles Cameron Erving an offensive tackle and Timmy Jernigan a defensive tackle were named to the second team, while in all Florida State had six players between the three teams, also more than any other school.
Auburn, currently No. 2 in the nation and scheduled to play Florida State for the national title on January 6, placed running back Tre’ Mason another Heisman finalist on the second team and offensive linemen Gregory Robinson and Resse Dismukes on the AP third team.
Last year’s first team All America quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel, the talented dual threat from Texas A&M was named to the second team.
For the second straight season, quarterback A.J. McCarron from Alabama was named to the third team. McCarron was also a finalist for this year’s Heisman.
This year’s receivers on the first team are Brandin Cooks from Oregon State who leads in total yards with 139 per game, and Mike Evans of Texas A&M who averages over 20 yards per catch.
The tight end on the first team is Jace Amaro from Texas Tech who has 98 receptions and 1,240 yards to lead all tight ends.
Stork is joined on the AP first team offensive line by Jake Matthews a tackle from Texas A&M, Cyrus Kouandjio a tackle from Alabama, Cyril Richardson a guard from Baylor and David Yankey a guard from Stanford. Last season both Yankey and Richardson were second team selections.
The rest of the first team defensive line is Aaron Donald a tackle from Pittsburgh who was the Bednarik and Nagurski award winner for the best defensive player in the nation and the Lombardi and Outland winner as the best lineman in the nation.
The SEC defensive player of the year, Michael Sam from Missouri is joined by Jackson Jeffcoat at defensive end. Anthony Barr from UCLA and Ryan Shazier of Ohio State are the other two linebackers on the first team.
Darqueze Dennard a cornerback from Michigan State joins Joyner on the first team, while safeties Deone Bucannon from Washington State and Cody Prewitt from Mississippi round out the defense.
First team punter was Memphis’ Tom Hornsey.
The SEC, Pac-12 and ACC all had six players make the first team.
