Ben Roethlisberger Takes Pay Cut To Return To Pittsburgh Steelers

Ben Roethlisberger has reached an agreement with the Steelers that will keep the quarterback in Pittsburgh for the 2021 season.

After Pittsburgh’s Wild Card loss to the Cleveland Browns last year, Ben Roethlisberger had some soul searching to do. That wasn’t the only uncertainty surrounding his future, with the Steelers up against the salary cap crunch.

Projections had the franchise at around $13 million over the limit.

According to reports, Ben Roethlisberger has agreed to take a pay cut to stay with the Steelers throughout next season. Big Ben’s new deal will save the Pittsburgh Steelers roughly $15 million in cap space.

Roethlisberger (39) is entering his 18th NFL season. He has been to the postseason with Pittsburgh 11 times, playing in 5 AFC Championship games. He took them to the Super Bowl three times, winning twice in 2006 and 2009.

Roethlisberger’s new deal will earn him $14 million in 2021, a $5 million decrease.

“It is my greatest honor to be a Pittsburgh Steeler and give my all for this organisation,” he said on Thursday.

“I am grateful to be at this stage of my career and more than happy to adjust my contract in a way that best helps the team to address other players who are so vital to our success. I love this game and love to compete, and I believe in this team and my ability to deliver when called upon. It all starts with great preparation and I am ready to go.”

“We are excited we were able to come to an agreement with Ben Roethlisberger on a new contract for him to return to the Steelers in 2021,” said general manager and vice president Kevin Colbert.

“We know that Ben can still play at a high level and do special things for this team. Our goal remains the same – to put together a roster that will compete for another championship. We are happy that Ben will be one of our leaders to help us accomplish that goal.”
