Cowboys Cut Michael Sam From Practice Squad
On Tuesday the Dallas Cowboys waived defensive end Michael Sam from their practice squad in order to make room for linebacker Troy Davis. Sam was signed by the Cowboys on Sept. 3 after being cut by the St. Louis Rams.
Sam responded to the news via Twitter in a series of three tweets:
According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, just last week Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett had been praising Sam’s work ethic in practice:
“Comes to work every day and practices hard,” Garrett said last week. “One of 10 practice roster guys that we have, so he’s working on his skills, trying to develop, but also doing a lot of other things. Playing offense, defense, playing the kicking game, that’s what a lot of those guys do.”
Sam is the first openly gay player to be drafted in the NFL, selected by the Rams in the seventh round out of Missouri. In 2013 he was the SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year and a former All-American for the Tigers.
