Dwayne Haskins: Make Or Break In Pittsburgh?

2019 first round Draft pick Dwayne Haskins has signed an agreement to join the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to reports.

The quarterback joins Pittsburgh after two years in Washington during which he played more games than he was ready for.

Despite starring for Ohio State, his coaches there advised Washington that Dwayne Haskins lacked maturity. Owner Dan Snyder signed him against the wishes of the football side of the organization.

The plan was for him to have a squad role in his rookie season. However, injuries and poor form meant that Dwayne Haskins was thrust into action. He ended up starting seven games as a rookie.

In 16 games, Haskins has 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. His completion percentage is just 60.1%.

If there is some hope, it’s that he did improve towards the end of his rookie season. His final two games that year resulted in a 74.8 QBR, compared to a season QBR of 28. His rating for last season was 31.

As well as that, disciplinary issues have been a problem, and ultimately lead to Washington showing him the door. Ron Rivera is on the record saying Haskins has franchise level talent, but needs to learn how to lead.

He hasn’t led, breaking Covid protocol twice and being fined $40,000. He was released less than a month ago as a result.

With Mason Rudolph, Josh Dobbs and perhaps Ben Roethlisberger on the Steelers roster, Haskins might get his chance to develop in the background.

However, Roethlisberger isn’t renowned for his mentorship. Not to mention he might not even be there. It will be down to coach Mike Tomlin and his staff to get the best out of this diamond in the rough.
