‘If anyone can come back, it’s Alex Smith’

Injured Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith ‘can come back’, according to Redskins president Bruce Allen.

Alex Smith sustained a compound leg fracture in Week 11 which ended, at least, his season. He underwent multiple surgeries at the time as well as catching an infection. Alex Smith was eventually released from hospital in mid December.

Allen was asked about Smith by reporters on Tuesday at Reese’s Senior Bowl practice in Mobile, Alabama.

“He’s moving around and well on his way to a recovery,” Allen said.

“It’s a tough thing for him and his family. All the love and care has helped him quite a bit.

“We’ll see how it goes. We’re optimistic. If anyone can come back, it’s Alex. I’m sure he wanted to shoot hoops at the game yesterday, but we’ll see.”

Allen refused to be drawn on whether the Washington Redskins are looking for another quarterback in the offseason.

“We prioritize every position on the team,” Allen said.

“And we’ll see what we get in free agency and the draft.”

He was also vague on the issue of more surgeries for Smith.

“I’m not going to get into that and I’m not a doctor. … He’s going to follow the doctor’s advice and his wife’s advice and well see what happens.”

The perspective from NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport on Tuesday was much more bleak, however. Rapoport said that Smith’s operation went “as well as it could be hoped”.

Although he said it was a “supreme long shot” that Smith will start next season, “If he’s going to play at all.”

The Redskins could be short at QB next year, with only Colt McCoy left in the depth chart. Smith has 4 years left on his current deal which has a $20.4 million cap for 2019.
