Jayson Tatum: Going Straight To The Playoffs ‘Unfair’

Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum had admitted that there is no perfect solution to resuming the NBA regular season.

However, as more players give their opinions on the matter, it’s clear the NBA has a problem. The players seem unwilling to scrap the regular season, while the league is willing to try anything.

“Everybody wants us to play,” Jayson Tatum said.

“The players, obviously, we want to play under the right circumstances. … I don’t think there’s a perfect way or a perfect scenario, a perfect way, to go about it, but most people would want to go [back] to the regular season.”

The New York Post’s Marc Berman this week reported that the NBA is “very determined to have a champion.” Note the specifics of that. The league is not determined to play out the rest of the season, just to have a champion. The coronavirus pandemic continues to disrupt society in general. As such there is no way of knowing when sport can get back up and running.

According to Berman, “nothing is off the table” as the NBA waits until it is appropriate to start playing again.

Jayson Tatum and the Celtics qualified for the playoffs before the season was suspended on March 12. However, he thinks jumping straight to the playoffs would be unfair on those teams who were vying for a spot.

“I don’t think that would be fair to just go right to the playoffs and teams that were playing well and fighting for that last position or last two [spots] not to get a chance,” Tatum said.

The NBA has over a dozen confirmed cases of Covid-19. This makes it the American sports league most heavily hit by the virus. As such, it has led the way in prevention measures not just for American sports, but for elite sports leagues worldwide.
