Knicks Re-Sign Jose Alvarado as James Dolan’s Comments Loom Over Free Agency

The New York Knicks are keeping one of their key pieces as guard Jose Alvarado is returning on a three-year, $14 million deal after declining his $4.5 million player option for next season.

The Knicks acquired Alvarado before the trade deadline in February, and he quickly fit into the mold as a key backcourt piece that added another reliable ball handler and perimeter defensive factor.

In 28 regular season games with New York in the regular season, he averaged 6.6 points and 3.8 assists while shooting 41.4 percent from the floor and 33.0 percent from beyond the arc in 16.9 minutes per game with three starts.

Alvarado made his biggest impact in the NBA Finals as his play was crucial down the stretch in helping the Knicks mount the historic 29-point comeback in Game 4’s win over the San Antonio Spurs. His play in the fourth quarter helped provide the necessary edge that further fueled the comeback victory.

With Alvarado back in the mix, it leaves the Knicks having to decide what to do with their remaining free agents, as Mitchell Robinson, Landry Shamet, and Jordan Clarkson are set to hit free agency.

Team owner James Dolan has already expressed that he won’t allow the salary cap to hit the second apron, meaning that there would be roster changes to avoid that financial limitation.

The Knicks currently have their entire starting lineup under contract through next season, which will likely lead to notable alterations to the bench unit this offseason.
