Derek Jeter and Kobe Bryant Both Got PAID!
On Friday two players who have been the face of their respective franchises for over a decade were richly rewarded for their years of service. And it’s safe to say the big payday was more about services rendered than future production.
Yankees star Derek Jeter, who turn 40-years-old next June, and Lakers legend Kobe Bryant, who turned 35-years-old in August, proved to be two of just a handful of athletes in the world whose value extends far beyond the bottom line.
Their worth can’t be calculated using a stat sheet and it’s almost impossible to put a price on their value. Though that’s exactly what executives on opposite coasts attempted to do.
Despite missing nearly all of the 2013 season to injury, the Yankees re-upped with their longtime leader Jeter. There was already a deal in place that would’ve kept him in pinstripes through next season.
The new agreement, which will pay Jeter $12 million next year, replaces the previous contract and provides Jeter with a hefty $2.5 million raise.
It’s no secret that the Lakers are on the hook for an awful lot of money at the moment, not just to Bryant, but to aging veterans like Pau Gasol and Steve Nash, who will earn $30 million between them this season. Throw Kobe into the mix and that number doubles.
An arrangement worked out between both parties this week suggests the Buss family wasn’t looking forward to cutting Bryant massive checks all season, preferring to rip it off like a bandaid instead.
Now Kobe will receive a one-time $24.3 million balloon payment on Nov. 1—also known as today—with an additional $6.1 million to be paid out over the course of the season. Which means his net worth has increased over 10 percent in the last 24 hours.
No small accomplishment, considering Kobe is reportedly worth well over $200 million.
