NBA Rumors: Lakers Have ‘Shopped’ Lou Williams With Trade Deadline Looming
The Los Angeles Lakers are headed for another losing season. The 2016-17 NBA season has not gone as planned with the playoff drought set to continue with the team having won only 19 games up to this point.
With the season lost, veteran Lou Williams may have become expendable with the NBA trade deadline a week away. According to Alex Kennedy of Hoops Hype, the Lakers have already begun to gauge trade interest in the 30-year-old guard:
On Tuesday, a general manager confirmed that the Lakers have, in fact, shopped Williams and seem likely to move him prior to the deadline.
Williams, who continues to play at a high level, has one of the most attractive contracts in the league with the trade deadline looming. The journeyman is set to make $7 million next season and is currently averaging a team-best 18.5 points per game while playing off the bench in Los Angeles.
The Lakers brass may look to sell high on Williams while title-contending teams around the league in need of a scoring guard off the bench look to bolster their roster with less than two months left in the season.
One potential destination is with the Cleveland Cavaliers. LeBron James has been asking the team’s front office for another playmaker and Williams fits the bill at a considerable discount. The Cavaliers have already shown interest in Jose Calderon and may change the conversation to Williams if they feel they can intrigue the Lakers with a trade package.
The NBA trade deadline is on Feb. 23 with the Lakers’ next game coming the day after against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
