Derrick Rose officially retires from the NBA
As the 2024-25 campaign inches closer, Memphis Grizzlies veteran point guard Derrick Rose announced his retirement after 16 NBA seasons.
“Knowing that I gave my all to the game, I feel confident in my decision,” Rose told ESPN. “Basketball was just the beginning for me. Now, it’s important that I give my all to my family — they deserve that.”
The 35-year-old took to social media through an Instagram post and full-page ads in each of the six cities he played in—Chicago, New York, Cleveland, Detroit, and Memphis—to express his appreciation and gratitude to each fan base.
Rose closes the book on an enthralling NBA journey that began with him quickly rising toward establishing himself as one of the game’s top players. It saw him become the league’s youngest MVP at 22 years old with the Chicago Bulls after averaging 25.0 points and 7.7 assists while leading his team to the league’s best record.
However, his career path changed after he tore an ACL during the first round of the 2012 playoffs. The injury forced him to miss the entire next season, and he played in only 10 games the following year.
Rose showed glimpses of his old self, but injuries hampered him in his various stops after his eight-year stint to begin his career with the Bulls.

He ventured through the second half of this career as more of a veteran presence and key factor off the bench. He holds career averages of 17.4 points and 5.2 assists while starting 518 games in 723 appearances.
