Grizzlies star Marc Gasol and Knicks coach David Fizdale squash beef
During the early goings of last season, there was much chatter around the Memphis Grizzlies. It centered on an internal conflict that was building around All-Star big man Marc Gasol and then-head coach David Fizdale.
This ultimately led to Fizdale’s firing after less than two seasons at the helm with the team. With that in full hindsight, the two have smoothened things over this past summer through a phone call, according to Tim MacMahon of ESPN.

Gasol and Fizdale made their peace during a phone conversation over the summer, putting to rest the differences that led Memphis management to fire Fizdale after a Nov. 26, 2017, loss to the Brooklyn Nets in which Gasol was benched the entire fourth quarter.
“It was a fantastic conversation,” Fizdale said before his Knicks beat the Grizzlies 103-98 on Sunday. “It was two men that evolved. That’s pretty cool to see a moment in your life, individually as a man, where your life changed and you got better because of it, somebody made you better. I credit him for that. He made me a better coach. He made me a better person. I was lucky to be his coach.”
This should put to bed any of the lingering tension between the two. There will certainly be some questions about what was discussed, but that is all behind them moving forward in their respective careers.

The Grizzlies have been off to a strong start this season. It holds one of the best records in the Western Conference at a 12-7 mark through the first 19 games under head coach J.B. Bickerstaff. This could see them stay firmly in the playoff picture as the season wears on.
Meanwhile, Fizdale is coaching his way through some early growing pains for the New York Knicks. The Knicks hold a 7-14 mark in their first 21 contests.
