Kings rookie Devin Carter set to miss six months

A few weeks after selecting Devin Carter with the 13th overall pick in this year’s draft, the Sacramento Kings will be without their prized rookie for several months.

Carter underwent left shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum that will be re-evaluated in around six months. It will keep him off the floor through at least the first half of the 2024-25 season.

Carter is coming off a highly productive season at South Carolina, where he averaged 19.7 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 3.6 assists which earned him the Big East Player of the Year award.

His absence will hurt the Kings’ backcourt, but the front office has significantly addressed that issue by landing star guard DeMar DeRozan in a three-team sign-and-trade last week.

DeRozan remains one of the league’s most productive scorers. He’s coming off averaging 24.0 points and 5.3 assists while shooting 48.0 percent from the field. He posted 43 games with at least 20 points, 14 30-point outings, and two 40-point performances.

It marked the 11th straight year that he’s averaged at least 20 points per contest. He will step into the Kings’ offense as a prominent offensive factor alongside DeAaron Fox, Domantas Sabonis, and Keegan Murray. DeRozan is a proven scorer and can be an effective late-game scoring option.

Sacramento is hoping to take the next toward becoming a legitimate NBA title contender in the stacked Western Conference. The Kings are coming off finishing ninth in the standings while failing to reach the playoffs out of the play-in tournament.
