Mavericks HC Jason Kidd believes Luka Doncic is better than Dirk Nowitzki
In his first few years in the NBA, Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks has cemented himself as one of the best players.
However, head coach Jason Kidd took a step further by stating that he believes Doncic is the greatest player in Dallas Mavericks history.
“He’s better than Dirk,” said Kidd during an interview on Dallas Radio Station 97.1 The Freak’s “The Downbeat” via ESPN. “He’s in the atmosphere of MJ, the best to ever do it, LeBron [James], Kobe [Bryant]. And so, just to appreciate what this young man’s doing at the age of 24, [it] is something that Dallas has never seen. I’ve said this internally: He is better than Dirk. He does things that Dirk could never do, and now is the opportunity of getting the right people around him to ultimately win a championship.”
Kidd’s comments certainly stir the pot a bit given that Nowitzki spent his entire Hall of Fame career in Dallas. His point of view likely comes from seeing Doncic’s quick ascension to the greatest in his first four-plus seasons.
The 24-year-old is already a five-time All-Star, earned four-time All-Time First Team selections, and won the Rookie of the Year award. Doncic is an elite scorer and passer who will only continue to elevate his game.

In his fifth year, he’s putting together arguably his best season. He’s currently second in scoring with 34.7 points and third with 9.6 assists while shooting 48.9 percent from the floor and 37.5 percent from beyond the arc.
Doncic is also less than a week removed from scoring a career-best and Mavericks’ single-game record of 73 points. The sky is the limit for him, and Kidd clearly sees that potential ahead.
