Rockets sign Steven Adams to three-year contract extension

Heading into the NBA offseason, the Houston Rockets had a lot of work to do to keep their team intact while also potentially making some game-changing moves to thrust them into the title-contending conversation for next season.

One of those moves was deciding on the long-term future of veteran center Steven Adams, as he was eligible to sign an extension with the team until June 30. The consensus seemed to be that Adams would test NBA free agency after a successful run during the NBA playoffs, but that didn’t turn out to be the case as he chose to sign a three-year extension with the team this week, according to Shams Charania of ESPN.

Houston Rockets center Steven Adams has agreed to a three-year, $39 million contract extension to stay with the franchise, sources told ESPN on Saturday.

A surprising move by Adams, but potentially smart for both sides. Adams gives Houston a presence in the paint with Alperen Sengun, making the Rockets a formidable opponent in the frontcourt.

The next order of business for the Rockets will be addressing Fred VanVleet’s contract situation as well as trying to acquire superstar forward Kevin Durant, who listed Houston as one of the three teams he’d like to play for next.

Adams had until June 30 to sign an extension with the Rockets. Houston now has until June 29 to make a decision on guard Fred VanVleet’s $44.9 million team option, and there is mutual interest on a reunion, sources said.

It could be a big offseason for the Rockets as they have the opportunity to be the biggest threat to the Oklahoma City Thunder if they can bring back VanVleet and acquire Durant without giving up too much for the superstar forward.
