Veteran guard Kyle Lowry re-signs with the 76ers

The Philadelphia 76ers continued their busy offseason by re-signing veteran point guard Kyle Lowry to a one-year deal.

The 76ers signed Lowry last season after he was bought out by Charlotte after a trade from the Miami Heat. In 23 games with 20 starts, he averaged 8.0 points and 4.6 assists. Meanwhile, he shot 44.4 percent from the field and 40.4 percent from beyond the arc.

In the playoffs, he averaged 7.0 points, 4.0 assists, and 3.5 rebounds in six games. As well as that, he shot 34.4 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent from 3-point range.

Although Lowry isn’t the player he once was, he remains a strong veteran presence and can serve as a reliable backcourt option. The 38-year-old is still a highly effective 3-point shooter, holding a career 36.8 percentage from deep.

His role next season will likely require him to be more of a playmaker as a passer after a busy offseason that is headlined by signing star forward Paul George to a four-year, $212 million max deal.

Meanwhile, the 76ers re-signed Kely Oubre while adding Caleb Martin, Andre Drummond, and Eric Gordon. Philadelphia possesses a veteran-laden roster that they hope can push them into championship contention.

Over the last several seasons, the 76ers have struggled to move deep into the playoffs. They are coming off a first-round playoff exit against the New York Knicks and, before that, lost in the Eastern Conference semifinals in three straight seasons.

The pressure is on the 76ers to make that leap to become a legit threat to dethrone the Boston Celtics next season.
