NFL free agency 2019: Which teams are in good shape?

The NFL season is still going for just under a month, but for 24 teams, the offseason have begun. Preparations have already been made for the next season. NFL free agency begins two months from now, and the draft another seven weeks or so after that.

With the salary cap expected to rise to $190 million, NFL teams have to be counting their cap space and wondering what they can get with the cash. So which teams are in the best space and what might they be looking for in NFL free agency? Let’s run down a few…

Most cap space

Indianapolis Colts – $123 million

The Colts are already a team in the Divisional round with a phenomenal quarterback, and yet they are the only franchise to have more than $100 million at their disposal. This somehow also includes Andrew Luck already being locked up for the long haul. Luckily for Indianapolis, it can go out and improve a solid defense with some front seven talent including guys like Grady Jarrett, Ezekiel Ansah, Ndamukong Suh and others. Then there is the matter of Le’Veon Bell, who while expensive, would make for an incredible addition to the backfield.

New York Jets – $99 million

New York has the advantage of Sam Darnold being on his rookie contract for the next four seasons. The Jets haven’t tied up much money in NFL free agency so far, but the offense needs to be addressed. This isn’t a great free-agent class for that side of the ball, but New York can make some solid additions with veterans such as Bell and Golden Tate.

Buffalo Bills – $87 million

Another team that desperately needs to add to the offense. It’s hard to see Buffalo fixing that side of the ball in one shot considering how many holes exist, but the Bills could make a nice dent. We have already mentioned Bell and Tate, but what about Jared Cook and Mark Ingram, along with their pick of a few offensive linemen to help round out the crop?

Cleveland Browns – $84 million

The Browns need to be smart with their money. Cleveland is going to have some massive contracts coming up with Myles Garrett, Baker Mayfield and Denzel Ward, but in the short-term, general manager John Dorsey can really splurge. Cleveland could use some more help in the front seven, and this class is insanely deep in that regard. The Browns could also use a pass-rusher to go opposite of Garrett, making someone like Jadeveon Clowney and Dee Ford intriguing (if they aren’t given the franchise tag).
