2020 NFL Draft: 4 teams most likely to draft a first-round back
4. Seattle Seahawks
The Seahawks drafted Rashaad Penny, and that hasn’t worked out well. Obviously, or they wouldn’t have made this list. Seattle has an All-Pro quarterback in Russell Wilson but behind him? A collection of guys. Chris Carson is the best of the bunch, but nobody is mistaking him for Marshawn Lynch.Â
If Seattle decided to upgrade the position, it could be the final piece to making the offense quite dynamic.
3. Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs adding another weapon would be genuinely horrifying for the rest of the league. After all, this is the team with Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, Mecole Hardman and Travis Kelce. They also have Damien Williams, who didn’t shine in the regular season but starred in the playoffs, scoring six touchdowns over three games.
However, the Chiefs only have Williams through next season. Adding a rookie back would be smart for the long term, and considering Kansas City doesn’t have many sea spots on its championship roster, this would be a good time to swing big on someone like J.K. Dobbins, D’Andre Swift or Jonathan Taylor.
2. New Orleans Saints
Before screaming the Saints have Alvin Kamara, think about it. New Orleans was best when Mark Ingram and Kamara were sharing the carries. Ingram brought a bruising style while Kamara was able to gain the off-tackle yards and catch the ball at a phenomenal pace.Â
If the Saints want to, they could use their No. 24 pick on a back to help ease Kamara’s burden. This also serves as protection in case the superstar goes down with an injury. New Orleans doesn’t have many roster issues, so this should be in play.
1. Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins, unlike the other three teams on the list, have a bevy of needs both offensive and defensive. Miami, though, has a league-high 14 draft picks including three in the first round. While general manager Chris Grier would be insane to take a back with his first pick (No. 5 overall), he could considering doing so with either of the others.
Miami was led in rushing yardage last year by… quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. Even if the value of running backs has decreased — it and has — it’ll never reach the point where an aging journeyman quarterback should be the headliner in the attack.
