2020 NFL Draft: 5 most puzzling picks of Round 1
5. Isaiah Wilson, RT, Tennessee Titans
Wilson makes sense from a positional standpoint. The Titans need someone to replace former All=Pro right tackle Jack Conklin, who left in free agency to join the Cleveland Browns on a three-year deal. However, most pundits believe Josh Jones of Houston and Boise State’s Ezra Cleveland both have higher ceilings and are more capable of playing tomorrow. The film on Wilson shows a power blocker — a good thing with Derrick Henry behind him — but someone in need of serious refinement in pass protection.
4. Jalen Reagor, WR, Philadelphia Eagles
Again, another perfect fit in terms of positional need, but perhaps a reach within that position. Reagor has never amassed 1,000 receiving yards in a season at TCU and comes to the Eagles as a projected No. 1 wideout alongside DeSean Jackson. It’s a big leap for Reagor, and while general manager Howie Roseman clearly believes in him, why take the Horned Frogs star over Denzel Mims, Justin Jefferson and Brandon Aiyuk? Seems dubious.
3. Damon Arnette, CB, Las Vegas Raiders
Arnette was almost universally believed to be a second or third-round pick. Instead, he came off the board to the Raiders at No. 19 overall. Yes, Las Vegas desperately needs help in the secondary, specifically at corner, However, general manager Mike Mayock still had Kristian Fulton and Jeff Gladney remaining on the board, among others. Arnette doesn’t have great physical traits and he’s going to be 24 years old come September.
2. Jordyn Brooks, LB, Seattle Seahawks
The Seahawks have a pattern in the first round. They trade pick, and they they stun everyone. Seattle took edge rusher T.J. Collier last year and running back Rashaad Penny the year prior. Both were not exactly lauded at theme, and to this point, have not panned out. Brooks fits the mold of a surprise on the draft’s opening night, being taken ahead of Patrick Queen, a stud inside linebacker out of LSU. Brooks is a downhill thumper who struggles to cover, something of a bad fit in today’s wide-open, speed-oriented game.
1. Jordan Love, QB, Green Bay Packers
This one doesn’t need much explaining. The Packers have Aaron Rodgers signed for four more seasons on an essentially unmovable contract through the upcoming three seasons. Love might be the future, but he’ll spend the majority of his cheap rookie deal on the bench. This is also going to infuriate Rodgers to no end, having his successor picked instead of a receiver who could help him win another Super Bowl.
