2021 NFL season: 5 teams who will fight for No. 1 pick
While every team wants to win the Super Bowl, these five squads are likely looking at a fight for the No. 1 pick after the 2021 NFL Season.
5. Jacksonville Jaguars
Yes, Trevor Lawrence is in the building, but so is Urban Meyer. Meyer was a tremendous college coach but his tenure is off to an uneven start and while winning national titles is great, history says it doesn’t translate well to the NFL unless you’re Jimmy Johnson. While it’s a long shot that Jacksonville once again has the No. 1 overall pick (something it never had in franchise history until 2021), the Jags have to be considered as one of the favorites with a current 15-game losing streak.

4. New York Jets
Last year, it almost seemed inevitable the Jets were going to go winless before pulling off a minor miracle and stealing two wins. Now, New York has a green head coach in Robert Saleh paired with a rookie quarterback in BYU product Zach Wilson. Is that duo going to become one of the new power couples in the NFL over the next few seasons, or do they crash with a middling roster — at best — around Wilson? Time will tell, but the Jets are a contender for the top spot in the 2022 draft.
3. Philadelphia Eagles
Again, another young pairing at head coach and quarterback. Sensing a theme? Hope so. Nick Sirianni could be a great head coach for a long time, or he could be looking for a new job. come Christmas. The same is true of second-year quarterback Jalen Hurts, who had some wonderful moments in his brief time as starter last year. He also had some ugly moments. What are the Eagles? If this gets ugly, it could be horrific.

2. Detroit Lions
The Lions are in a rebuild. They do have Jared Goff to at least keep the quarterback position from being a disaster, but the team around him is pitiful. Rookie head coach Dan Campbell has much to prove, and while. Detroit is a hungry, young team, it’s also one painfully short on talent in a division that could have three teams legitimately fighting for the playoffs.
1. Houston Texans
This is the easy choice. For a litany of reasons, we don’t know if Deshaun Watson will be playing this year. We also have one of the oldest rosters, and one of the worst. Meanwhile, head coach David Culley seems a very nice man, but also one in for the challenge of a lifetime. Houston takes the top spot on the list by a wide margin.
