49ers not likely to play QB Brock Purdy in preseason opener
The San Francisco 49ers are a team that is hoping to be a legitimate Super Bowl title contender once again in the NFC, but a lot will ride on the health of second-year quarterback Brock Purdy, whose status has been uncertain as of late.
Fortunately for the 49ers, it appears Purdy will be ready to go once the regular season starts next month when San Francisco takes on the Pittsburgh Steelers on the road in Week 1.

However, the 49ers don’t seem to be keen on playing Purdy when the preseason gets underway for the storied franchise on Sunday on the road against the Las Vegas Raiders. Head coach Kyle Shanahan told the media that he doubts Purdy will get on the field on Sunday via ESPN.
“I doubt Brock plays,” San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan said. “We haven’t fully decided it yet. Usually, when we go scrimmage against guys, we rarely play our starters … [We’re] more into the practices than the games, but I’ve changed my mind a couple times too based on how the practices go. Usually, that’s our plan, but let’s see how those practices go.”
With the 49ers suffering injuries to all three of their top quarterbacks last season, with Jimmy Garoppolo, Trey Lance and Purdy all going down at certain points in the season, the health of the position is the team’s top priority moving forward.

That said, resting Purdy in the preseason is the smart move for Shanahan and company, but one would have to think they’ll want to see him at some point before Week 1.
