Chiefs may wait a year to give Patrick Mahomes a contract extension
The Kansas City Chiefs are headed to Super Bowl 54 to take on the defensive powerhouse, San Francisco 49ers. Reigning NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes had another stellar season while also dealing with a knee injury. The issue threatened to end his year and the team’s title aspirations.
Mahomes has proved that his MVP season last year was no fluke. As a result, the young quarterback is expected to become a very rich man in the near future. The team has always intended to extend Mahomes’ contract making him the highest-paid quarterback in the game, but it may now take a year or more to get that done says team owner, Clark Hunt, via ESPN’s Adam Teicher.

“There will be a right time sometime in the next 12 to 15 months to extend Patrick, and when I say right time, I mean right time for both the player and the club,” Hunt said as the Chiefs prepare for Super Bowl LIV against the San Francisco 49ers.
“I don’t want to say necessarily it has to be this offseason, but I will say that it’s a priority to get him done.
“I hope Patrick is here for his entire career, and that’s going to be our goal.”

Mahomes has already accomplished so much in two years as the team’s starter under center in Kansas City. Considering that, it seems a bit unfortunate that the team would take their time in signing him up. Mahomes is already the best quarterback in the game today and is more than deserving of a new deal.
Regardless of when Mahomes may ultimately get paid by the Chiefs, the team and their quarterback are solely focused on their upcoming matchup against the 49ers on Feb. 2 in Miami.
