Commanders acquire veteran QB Carson Wentz in trade with Colts
A day after the Denver Broncos acquired star quarterback Russell Wilson, the Washington Commanders shifted their dynamic under center.
According to ESPN, Commanders made the blockbuster move to land Carson Wentz from the Indianapolis Colts.
The Colts are trading quarterback Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders for a package of draft picks, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Indianapolis received third-round selections in the 2022 and 2023 drafts. The pick in this year’s draft can turn into a second-round selection if Wentz plays 70% of Washington’s snaps. They can also swap second-round picks this year.
The decision to move off the former Pro Bowler doesn’t come as a complete surprise as chatter remained that the team could trade him. He is coming off a lone campaign with the Colts, where he put together a productive season with 3,563 passing yards along with 27 touchdown passes to seven interceptions and a 94.6 passer rating.
However, he struggled down the season’s stretch, failing to push the Colts into the playoffs. He threw for fewer than 200 passing yards in each of the last two games when Indianapolis needed just one win to secure a postseason berth.

Wentz heads into another situation where he is the clear-cut starter in Washington. He has provided stability, but it could mark his last opportunity to prove he can return being a franchise cornerstone.
The 29-year-old is in the second year of his four-year, $128 million deal that runs through the 2024 campaign. After the 2022 season, his contract holds no dead-cap hit, making his first year in Washington a make-or-break situation.
