Daniel Jones given massive vote of confidence by Giants

The New York Giants are committed to Daniel Jones as their starting quarterback, whether that’s for better or worse.

MetLife Stadium is big enough for one quarterback controversy. Not two.

The New York Jets are figuring out their situation under center. Meanwhile, the New York Giants are having no such issues. On Tuesday, GM Dave Gettleman spoke to the media  about whether Big Blue would seek competition for Jones. Gettleman was blunt. Per NFL.com:

“We’ve had Daniel for two years; we’ve done the evaluation on him and we really believe he’s the guy. No reason to go look. What we’re doing isn’t fantasy football, we’re not playing, we’re not doing that. We’ve got a conviction on him, he’s everything we want, he’s got all the physical skills and again I say this all the time, the kid just finished his second year of NFL football. How many of us after two years at our new job were great? No, we all start at point ‘A’ and we hopefully get to point ‘Z,’ but the one common denominator is it takes time. Everybody has to understand that. We believe in Daniel and that’s where it is.”

Daniel Jones, 23, has started 26 games in his career since being take in the 2019 first round out of Duke. In said time, he’s completed 62.2 percent of passes with 35 touchdowns against 22 interceptions. Meanwhile, he’s regressed somewhat significantly from a statistical standpoint in 2020.

Heading into his third season, the Giants figure to improve the offensive line while getting star running back Saquon Barkley back on the field after he sustained a season-ending torn ACL in Week 2 against the Chicago Bears. Factoring in receivers Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton, Jones has enough around him to be a mid-tier quarterback with upside. If he doesn’t reach that modest bar, perhaps Gettleman is on the hot seat, and therefore, so is the quarterback he drafted.

In the winnable NFC East, the Giants desperately need Jones to become more apt for the big play and less susceptible to turnovers. If those things happen, New York can win behind one o the better young defenses in the league and a quality second-year head coach in Joe Judge.

For Jones and the Giants, the training wheels are off. Gettleman has given the ultimate vote of confidence. Now Jones has to prove it correct.
