Dolphins Put Jonathan Martin On Reserve List, Ending His Season
Ted Wells’ investigation into the actions of Dolphins offensive lineman Richie Incognito and his alleged mistreatment of teammate Jonathan Martin is still underway, but the team has decided to end any speculation as to when Martin may be returning.
Over the weekend Martin was placed on the reserve/non-football illness list, which effectively ended his season. The move freed up a roster sport and allowed the Dolphins to promote safety D.J. Campbell from the practice squad.
The decision comes as no surprise, given Martin hasn’t even been in Miami since he left the team’s facilities on October 28th. He traveled back to his home in California, reportedly to seek medical attention for emotional distress suffered over the last two seasons.
Initially there was little information offered up by any involved parties, but days later ESPN broke the story about a culture of bullying inside the Dolphins locker room. A culture that seems to have been fostered and stoked by Incognito.
Incognito was suspended indefinitely on November 3rd, after a transcript of a very harshly worded voicemail he left for Martin was made public via the ESPN story. Recently he agreed to extend the suspension beyond the four-week window allowed by the league, which allowed the investigation to continue and Incognito to resume getting paid.
What’s unknown at this point is whether we’ve seen the last of either or both players in a Dolphins uniform. There’s no chance they’ll both return, but at this point it’s hard to imagine either of them will.
