Geno Smith gets high praise from Raiders teammates, coaches

There remains a renewed buzz around the Las Vegas Raiders in what’s been a transformative offseason.

Much of this has been driven by the arrival of former Pro Bowl quarterback Geno Smith, who is now the cornerstone of the offense.

His presence has quickly been felt around the team, which has led wide receiver Jacobi Meyers to heap praise toward his new teammate by saying it’s the first time he’s experienced stability under center since playing with future Hall of Famer Tom Brady.

“I truly mean that,” said Meyers via ESPN. “He knows what he is doing [and] he shows up the same every day. I haven’t seen him have a bad day.”

Since arriving in Las Vegas, Smith has fully embraced a leadership role within the team that has been felt throughout the organization.

Offensive coordinator Chip Kelly underlined the 34-year-old’s ability to be an extension of the coaching staff to his teammates.

“He’s great. Geno is literally like a second coach,” said Kelly. “When you’re in that room with him and [quarterbacks coach] Greg Olson, there [are] a lot of ideas going around.

“His football acumen is really off the charts, and it’s impressive to be around him.”

Smith will play a key part in helping the Raiders finally get over the hump toward playoff contention. Since Derek Carr’s departure, the franchise has struggled to find consistent quarterback play while falling well out of vying for the postseason.

Las Vegas has revamped the offense by acquiring Smith while adding Kelly as the offensive coordinator and drafting Boise State standout running back Ashton Jeanty.

The pieces are in place for the Raiders to leap to become one of the surprise teams in the 2025 season.
