Giants star Saquon Barkley won’t sign franchise tender
The New York Giants are coming off making a significant stride forward after reaching the playoffs.
Since then, the Giants have secured quarterback Daniel Jones to a four-year, $160 million. New York also kept star running back Saquon Barkley in tow by placing the franchise tag on him.
However, Barkley’s situation is far from resolved as reports emerged that he won’t sign the franchise tender before the offseason programs begin. The Giants have expressed a desire to ink him to a long-term deal, but things haven’t progressed toward that.

Instead, there remains uncertainty whether Barkley will receive a long-term deal before the July 17 deadline. ESPN reported earlier this offseason that the Pro Bowler would have accepted a contract that paid him around $14 million annually.
The Giants haven’t budged toward giving Barkley a significant deal, which has left the door open to him playing through the 2023 campaign on a one-year deal. He is coming off going through his first full season since his rookie year, finishing fourth with 1,312 rushing yards along with 10 touchdowns.

Barkley has re-emerged as a key piece to the Giants’ offensive game plan. Although he’s coming off an impressive season, concerns around him remain about his health as he experienced significant injuries in three consecutive campaigns.
New York certainly wants to keep Barkley in the mix, but a long-term deal may come with some hesitancy due to his injury history. Time will tell whether the Giants can work out a new deal with their star running back.
