Jets interview former Titans head coach Mike Vrabel

The New York Jets took another step forward in their head coach search by interviewing Mike Vrabel for the vacancy.

Vrabel is expected to be a hot commodity on the coaching carousel that will see him coveted by several teams. The 49-year-old was available to talk to the Jets because his coaching and personnel consulting contract with the Cleveland Browns expired Monday.

Before working with the Browns, Vrabel spent six seasons as the Tennessee Titans head coach, where he held a 54-45 regular season record while reaching the playoffs three times. That includes reaching the AFC championship game once but losing their first postseason games in their two other trips.

Tennessee struggled to find consistency in his last season, where the team had a 13-21 record that led to his firing. Vrabel is the second candidate New York has met with after speaking with former Carolina Panthers and Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera.

The Jets are also expected to speak with Rex Ryan about the position. Ryan spent six years at the helm with New York, where the team held a 46-50 regular season and 4-2 playoff mark.

New York reached the playoffs twice under Ryan, which occurred in his first two seasons and featured the team reaching back-to-back AFC championship game appearances.

The Jets haven’t appeared in the postseason in 14 years since Ryan’s tenure, marking the league’s longest active playoff drought.

New York has also spoken to four candidates for their general manager position in former Titans general manager Jon Robinson, former Atlanta Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff, Reese’s Senior Bowl executive director Jim Nagy, and ESPN analyst Louis Reddick, who previously worked in the front office with the Commanders and Philadelphia Eagles.
