Kyle Shanahan opens up 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk’s situation
Throughout the offseason, there remains uncertainty around star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk’s future with the San Francisco 49ers.
As he moves toward playing the 2024 campaign under a one-year deal, it has left the door open for potentially trading him before the start of next season.
According to ESPN, the New England Patriots have decided to stop pursuing trade scenarios to land the 26-year-old. The Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers are still in the picture, actively looking to land Aiyuk, but they haven’t moved toward a trade.
The 49ers have given him permission to negotiate with other teams, but there remains the possibility that a long-term deal can be worked out to keep him with the franchise.
“It’s been at this point for a little bit, so nothing really new to me,” coach Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday via ESPN. “You’re always disappointed when you can’t keep hold of all your players or it’s not going exactly right. I don’t like losing anybody, so that’s why I’m hoping it does work out here. But right now, we don’t have that solved yet. I hope it does.”
He remains off the team’s practice field despite showing up to training camp this offseason. He has attended team meetings and has regularly been an active participant.
