Lions secure Aidan Hutchinson’s long-term future

The Detroit Lions secured another long-term piece of the puzzle after inking star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson to a four-year, $180 million extension.

It includes $141 million guaranteed while his $45 million annual salary sits behind only Green Bay Packers’ edge rusher Micah Parsons ($46.5 million) for the highest among non-quarterbacks in league history.

Meanwhile, his guaranteed money ranks as the highest ever for a non-quarterback under his deal, which keeps him under contract through 2030. Hutchinson expressed that he had a strong desire to secure a new contract to keep him in Detroit for the long term.

“We really wanted to get a deal done,” Hutchinson said Thursday via Detroitlions.com. “But as you know these things can get a little bit hairy the more you get into it and the longer it goes with what you see from other guys around the league.

“We were able to get it done and move on from it and really just super grateful and just ready to focus everything on this season and move on from it and put that behind me and now really focus on what’s important.”

After missing much of the 2024 campaign due to a fractured tibia and fibula, Hutchinson has returned to being one of the league’s best pass rushers. His dominance to begin this season gave the Lions the confidence and conviction needed to commit to the Michigan product long-term.

The 25-year-old currently has six sacks while his 29 quarterback pressures sit second behind Parsons, and his four forced fumbles are tied for the league lead with Buffalo Bills defensive end Joey Bosa.

The Lions can now move forward with one of their defensive anchors locked in place for years to come.
