New York Jets won’t have credibility until Adam Gase is shown the door

The New York Jets are the league’s worst team at 0-4. Until head coach Adam Gase is fired, nothing will change.

It’s over. Unfortunately, the New York Jets haven’t realized it yet.

This is an odd thing to say about a. head coach who has only experienced 20 games with the franchise, and gone 7-13 in them. A poor record for sure, but not usually a fireable offense. Yet with Adam Gase, the Jets are getting worse by the minute despite the belief his arrival, coupled with the signings of running back Le’Veon Bell and linebacker C.J. Mosley, would turn the club into a playoff contender.

Fast forward to 2020, and Gase has done everything imaginable to crater the season. New York has never seemed a great fit for his abrasive style in press conferences, one where he is consistently ready to blame players without taking full accountability himself. It’s been a bad marriage with he and Bell, who have never appeared on the same page whether we’re talking usage or playing time.

Moving to the immediate, the Jets are 0-4 after losing a Thursday night affair to Brett Rypien and the Denver Broncos at home. New York was pathetic defensively, taking a multitude of personal fouls while allowing 37 points to a moribund offense.

Even worse, quarterback Sam Darnold took a wicked hit in the first half and briefly left with a shoulder injury, only to return and finish the game. On Friday, Gase told the media Darnold has a sprained shoulder and could miss time. Per NFL.com:

“I think anything’s on the table right now. I haven’t really had a chance to talk to him in detail; Just really, when I saw him, it was more about how he felt right now. … We just need to make sure that we lay everything out and kind of see where we go from here and what’s best for him, not just next week but long term.”

Losing games is bad enough. Putting an injured player — let along your young quarterback — back into the game is malpractice by the organization.

Firing Gase tomorrow won’t save the season. The Jets will still stink, which is why he’s not going anywhere in the coming days and weeks. Still, to move on from the stench it has caused, New York needs to part ways and start cleaning up the mess, one that starts with the head coach.
