Packers should be all on on improving their offense

The Green Bay Packers shouldn’t be worrying about their run defense.

No, Raheem Mostert putting up 220 rushing yards and four touchdowns on them in the NFC Championship Game isn’t ideal, but it’s also not going to continuously happen. Nobody is that bad against the run, even if it will leave a sour taste as the final memory of the 2019 team.

The more pressing issue is getting Aaron Rodgers some help on the outside.

Rodgers is 36 years old and still one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL. Maybe even a top-five candidate in the right season. Still, he has Davante Adams and a bunch of random weapons, players no defensive coordinator is worrying about deep into the night.

General manager Brian Gutekunst has a few routes he can take to fix this. He can either go out and spent sodemoney on a proven commodity on free agency, or wait until the draft and dip his toe into one of the best receiver drafts we’ve ever seen.

With $24 million in cap space, Gutekunst has to be wily. There are no obvious cap casualties of great magnitude and while adding a receiver is a priority, Green Bay also has to bring back (or at least attempt to bring back) right tackle Bryan Bulaga, who is hitting unrestricted free agency.

The Packers have little chance of landing a star talent in A.J. Green or Amari Cooper, but the second tier isn’t out of the question. Considering how great the rookie crop is, the veteran market should be somewhat depressed, helping Gutekunst save some money if he does indeed go this route. A few options include Emmanuel Sanders, Robby Anderson, Demarcus Robinson and Randall Cobb.

In the draft, the Packers picked 27th in the first round. While CeeDee Lamb of Oklahoma and Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs III of Alabama figure to long be off the board by then, there’s a real shot for Green Bay to land Brandon Aiyuk (Arizona State), Jalen Reagor (TCU) and others.

No matter which way the Packers end up addressing the spot opposite Adams, they simply have to be correct. Green Bay still has a championship-caliber quarterback and a defense with bookend pass-rushers in Za’Darius Smith and Preston Smith.

Now is not the time to move without pace.
