Packers say they never told Aaron Rodgers they would grant a trade
After the Green Bay Packers fell to another disappointing playoff exit, the attention shifts over to star quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ future.
The three-time MVP has yet to decide whether he will return for the 2022 season, as he’s under contract for one more year. Beyond that, the discussion has moved toward Rodgers potentially forcing his way out of Green Bay if he desired.
The assumption had become that the Packers would grant him a trade if he wanted to play elsewhere. However, general manager Brian Gutekunst voiced on Wednesday that has never been the case.
“That was not something I told him,” Gutekunst said via Rob Demovsky of ESPN. “Again, I think the whole conversation with Aaron last season before he came back was that, regardless, at the end of this past season, that we would sit down as a group and we would work it out one way or another.”
The Packers strongly desire to bring back Rodgers, especially after he put together back-to-back MVP campaigns. Green Bay finished the 2021 regular season with the league’s best record.
The franchise sat a special teams’ miscue away from pushing their way toward a third straight NFC championship game appearance. Reports have emerged that the Packers may utilize the offseason to build a stronger supporting cast of talent around Rodgers.

Those efforts will likely start with inking star wide receiver Davante Adams to a lucrative long-term extension. Adams and Rodgers have developed a strong bond over the years, and his presence may play a huge part in getting the future Hall of Fame quarterback to commit for at least another season.
