Patriots’ Tom Brady says ‘you’re susceptible to big hits’ if QBs like Bills’ Josh Allen run

One of the biggest driving points for the NFL over the last several years has been protecting the quarterback. Veteran Tom Brady has weighed in on the rising trend of running QBs.

The topic has once again hit the forefront after Buffalo Bills second-year quarterback Josh Allen suffered a concussion. Allen was concussed after being hit during a scramble on Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots. During his weekly Monday morning interview, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady said that this is a risk that running quarterbacks take (h/t Mike Reiss of ESPN)

“A lot of quarterbacks who do run, they’re trying to make yards, and it’s great. At the same time, you’re susceptible to big hits,” Tom Brady said in his weekly interview on sports radio WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show.”

This was a vicious hit that could have possibly drawn a flag. Although, it is certainly a risk that Allen took. He put himself in harm’s way in an attempt to get more yards down the field. As a result, he was  a bigger target for defenders.

There isn’t any ill-will at play, but it makes him more likely to get hurt, especially with defenders looking to jar the ball loose. This makes for incidents like this a possibility for any quarterback that decides to consistently run.

Beyond the physical punishment that comes with being hit, there is a bigger chance of suffering a concussion. It’s the type of play that hopefully, Allen will look to avoid in order to preserve his long-term health for his NFL career and most importantly his life well beyond that
