Raiders QB Geno Smith opens up about reuniting with Pete Carroll

Two-time Pro Bowl quarterback Geno Smith is set to play his first campaign with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Smith will do so with the familiar face heading the charge in head coach Pete Carroll, who previously coached him with the Seattle Seahawks. During his introductory press conference, the 34-year-old voiced his excitement to play under Carroll once more.

“I think there is unfinished business,” Smith said Monday via ESPN. “And I think, when people think about my story, Coach Carroll was a big part of that. He gave me an opportunity when not many people would have.”

Smith spent five out of the last six seasons in Seattle with Carroll at the helm. It was Carroll’s trust in him that helped him earn the starting job once Russell Wilson was traded to the Denver Broncos.

Since then, Smith has become a bonafide starting NFL quarterback behind his high level of production. In 37 games under Carroll, he posted 8,641 passing yards along with 55 touchdowns to 21 interceptions.

Smith had a career rebirth with the Seahawks that has now led him to be in the driver’s seat toward leading the Raiders back to the playoffs.

Las Vegas has already shown strong commitment by working out a two-year, $75 million extension that puts him under contract through the 2027 season. The deal can be worth up to $85.5 million and includes $66.5 million guaranteed.

Smith is coming off setting the Seahawks’ single-season record with 4,320 passing yards, along with 21 touchdown passes to 15 interceptions and a 93.2 passer rating.
