Before the move, there had been rumblings that the Rams would move off Barron this offseason. This was due to their desire to clear salary cap space. He still has two years left on his five-year, $45 million deal. The decision to part ways with him has saved the Rams $6.33 million in salary cap space. However, it will carry a dead-cap hit of $3.33 million.
In the last couple of seasons, Barron has battled through injuries that have limited his effectiveness on the field. He has been a key part of their linebacking core, but his consistent health issues make it hard to keep him under the payroll as one of the highest-paid players in the league at his position.
The Rams are expected to make a hard push to keep defensive end, Dexter Fowler, while attempting to retain defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. The Rams also have other notable free agents such as guard Roger Saffold, who has previously expressed interest in staying with the team.
