Sam Darnold agrees to three-year deal with Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks squared away their quarterback situation by agreeing to a three-year, $100.5 million deal with Sam Darnold.

The contract features a $55 million guaranteed that cements him as the Seahawks’ future, moving forward.

Seattle landed Darnold only three days after surprisingly trading Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders for a third-round pick. It came after the team failed to work out an extension with Smith during last month’s NFL scouting combine.

Darnold is coming off his best campaign, which saw him earn his first Pro Bowl selection by finishing fifth in the league with 4,319 passing yards and 35 touchdown passes while holding a 102.5 passer rating.

The 27-year-old anchored the Minnesota Vikings’ push toward 14 wins and a playoff berth. However, Darnold struggled in his last two games, where he was sacked 11 times, and the Vikings suffered lopsided losses to the Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Rams.

The Seahawks hope that Darnold can recapture his 2024 success and lead them back to the postseason. However, that task may be more daunting given the significant roster changes made following the trade of Pro Bowl wideout DK Metcalf to the Pittsburgh Steelers and the release of veteran wide receiver Tyler Lockett.

Seattle will lean on Jaxson Smith-Njigba to lead the charge after his breakout second campaign, where he posted career highs across the board with 100 receptions for 1,130 receiving yards and six touchdowns.

Darnold’s connection with Smith-Njigba will be the focal point of the passing game that Seattle builds the offense around.
