Sean McVay raves about Matthew Stafford after near-perfect game vs. Bears
After months of building anticipation and hype, star quarterback Matthew Stafford finally made his official debut with the Los Angeles Rams.
Stafford didn’t disappoint as he completed 20-of-26 passes for 321 yards with three touchdowns to zero interceptions and a career-high 156.1 passe rating in the 34-14 win over the Chicago Bears.
After the game, head coach Sean McVay continued to sing praise toward his new quarterback.
“It was great job by him being able to flip his hips and make an unbelievable throw,” McVay said via Pro Football Talk. “I think that’s kind of one of those things, he’s gifted, he’s got a great ability to be able to change his arm slot and make all types of throws, whether it be short, intermediate or down the field, but he’s — you’re not limited in anything you can do with him in the pass game.”
Despite it being his first official game with Los Angeles, Stafford displayed an array of passes and throws. It featured him making some deep throws down the field, with a pair of 50-plus yard touchdown passes to wide receivers Van Jefferson and Cooper Kupp.

Stafford’s arm strength will allow McVay to open up the playbook in a greater sense than he did before with Jared Goff. He’s also an experienced quarterback that he can lean on to direct the offense further.
There will be some bumps along the way as Stafford gets more comfortable in the offensive scheme. Nonetheless, it was nothing short of a promising start.
