Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney ‘progressing’ in rehab from knee surgery

Through the early goings of OTAs for the Houston Texans among the notable players unable to participate include Pro Bowl linebacker Jadeveon Clowney due to his recovery from a minor arthroscopic procedure that he underwent on his knee back in January.

It now appears that Clowney will continue to remain a non-participant in OTAs. Although, head coach Bill O’Brien stated that he has continued to make progress in his rehab from the operation. (h/t Sarah Barshop of ESPN)

“I think [Clowney is] doing OK with the medical team, trying to get better,” O’Brien said Wednesday. “He’s in the meetings. I think he’s progressing.”

The Texans don’t expect him to be on the field for OTAs. However, O’Brien stated that training camp next month is a reasonable target date for the 25-year-old’s return to the team. There doesn’t appear to be any rush to get him back on the field this offseason as the expectation is that he will be medically cleared at some point in the near future.

Clowney is coming off a promising campaign. He posted a career-high 9.5 sacks in 2017 that contributed to his second straight Pro Bowl selection. He is also set to enter the fifth-year option of his rookie deal. Clowney will earn $12.3 million for the 2018 season, which the two sides have made progress toward working out a new long-term extension to keep him in Houston for the next several years.

The Texans will continue to monitor the situation as Clowney looks to be nearing his medical clearance to participate with the team in the coming weeks.
