Veteran kicker Robbie Gould has had enough of the 49ers
In the last few days, there have been several questions about the future of kicker Robbie Gould with the San Francisco 49ers.
This has reached the point where head coach Kyle Shanahan addressed the topic of discussion on Thursday stating that the team has no intention of moving the veteran kicker, according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN.
“We love having Robbie here,” Shanahan said. “We understand that he doesn’t want to live here long-term and he’s made that clear to us and we get that. But we do have a franchise tag and he’s that good of a kicker that he’s worth franchising. Unfortunately, we know we’re not going to have him here long-term. I think that’s been pretty clear. No hard feelings about that. I can understand his reasons but I’m pretty excited to have a good kicker this year.”
This has been an ongoing situation as the team placed the franchise tag on him back in March and has yet to hammer out any long-term deal. However, these comments from Shanahan also show that Gould doesn’t have the desire to be with the team for the rest of his career however long that may be.
He has reportedly requested to move closer to his home in Chicago, which has made it difficult for any type of progress to be made on a new extension with the 49ers. Ultimately, it’s a situation where both sides should be able to work out at some point during this offseason prior to the 2019 campaign.
