Veteran QB Geno Smith inks two-year extension with Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders secured their long-term future under center after agreeing to a two-year extension for $75.5 million with former Pro Bowl quarterback Geno Smith.

The contract could reach up to $85.5 million if incentives are reached, while it includes $66.5 million guaranteed. Smith’s new deal runs through the 2027 season.

The move comes a few weeks after the Raiders acquired the veteran quarterback in a trade for a 2025 third-round selection. Smith rejoins head coach Pete Carroll, with whom the two paired together for several seasons with the Seattle Seahawks.

Carroll is set to begin his first year with the Raiders after last coaching the Seahawks in 2023. His ties to Smith played a significant factor in the franchise acquiring him last month.

Smith reset his career with Seattle, becoming a legitimate NFL starting quarterback. He’s coming off setting the Seahawks’ single-season records with 4,320 passing yards and a 70.4 percent completion rate, along with posting 21 touchdown passes and 15 interceptions.

The 34-year-old steps into a situation where the Raiders were in desperate need of stability at quarterback. Smith should provide that with the hope that their rebuilt roster can lift them back into playoff contention.

Las Vegas will likely continue to lean on star tight end Brock Bowers as the primary passing game target next to wide receiver Jacobi Meyers, who is coming off a career-best campaign with 87 receptions for 1,087 receiving yards and four touchdowns.

The Raiders could look to add more offensive talent through the upcoming draft, potentially targeting Boise State standout running back Ashton Jeanty with their sixth overall selection.
