Niners place CB Richard Sherman on IR with leg injury

The San Francisco 49ers are 0-1 and are already considerably banged up to start the season. One of the surprise names placed on injured reserve is former Seahawks superstar Richard Sherman. Sherman played all but a handful of snaps in last Sunday’s loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

Richard Sherman was an iron man for the Seahawks up until the Achilles rupture in the cursed 2017 season. The injury ended his time in Seattle and led to his move to San Francisco. In 2018 he missed a couple of games due to a calf strain and in 2019 he missed one game with a hamstring pull.

This leg injury is sort of unexpected as there wasn’t really any indication that he was hurt during the game. 2016 will remain his most recent season in which he played in every game.

Now the bigger picture beyond Sherman for the 49ers is they have several notable players already on the shelf or in danger of missing time. They are particularly depleted at wide receiver, hence they signed Mohamed Sanu.

If there’s good news for San Francisco it’s the fact that they play the New York Jets and Giants consecutive weeks before embarking on a three-game homestand that includes a visit from the Miami Dolphins. In other words, if they’re going to lose key players they might as well not have them for the soft part of the schedule.
