Up-and-coming running back Dion Lewis of the New England Patriots went down with a knee injury on Sunday in the win over the Washington Redskins. Lewis suffered the injury without contact leading many to believe his injury could be a season-ending injury.

According to Jim McBride of The Boston Globe, Lewis did indeed suffer a torn ACL and will miss the rest of the season as a result.

The Patriots and Dion Lewis suffered a tough blow when it was revealed Monday that the energetic running back was lost for the season a day after suffering a torn left ACL in Sunday’s 27-10 win over the Redskins at Gillette Stadium.

Lewis was placed on injured reserve, but no corresponding move was made.

Lewis quickly became a pleasant surprise for the defending Super Bowl champions this season with the relatively unknown back bursting on the scene in Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Lewis racked up 120 total yards and proved to be another viable weapon in the Patriots offense.

Although Lewis never cracked 100 yards rushing or receiving, the 25-year-old became a consistent through to opposing defense in both the passing game and coming out of the backfield. Lewis played in seven of the eight games played for the Patriots this season finishing the year with 622 yards from scrimmage and four total touchdowns.

With Lewis on the shelf for the rest of the season, New England will have to find another player to step up and fill the void. The Patriots will likely turn to veterans LeGarrette Blount and Brandon Bolden to help shoulder the load in Lewis’ absence.

New England remains undefeated with a flawless 8-0 record while leading the way in the AFC East division. Although losing Lewis is a major blow to the offense, the Patriots are still widely considered to be the best all-around team in the NFL with a legitimate shot to repeat as Super Bowl champions.
