Tampa awarded Super Bowl LV
The NFL made it official on Wednesday that Tampa will host Super Bowl LV in 2021. It will be Tampa’s first time hosting the game since February, 2009.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers Co-Chairman Bryan Glazer released a statement on the team’s website.
“The final approval of Super Bowl LV is a great source of pride for the Glazer family, the Buccaneers organization and the entire Tampa Bay region,” Buccaneers Co-Chairman Bryan Glazer said. “We have made substantial improvements in recent years to ensure that Raymond James Stadium could ultimately host the game for a third time and we appreciate that our fellow owners have recognized the stadium and our area’s long and distinguished history as a world-class host city.â€
The game was originally scheduled to be held in Los Angeles. But delays in the new Los Angeles stadium pushed the Southern California Super Bowl back one year. That opened the door for Tampa, assuming stadium renovations were met.
This will mark Tampa’s fifth time hosting the game. The old Tampa Stadium played host to Super Bowls XVIII (1984) and XXV (1991). Raymond James Stadium has held two Super Bowls, as well. It hosted Super Bowls XXXV (2001) and XLIII (2009).
The announced future Super Bowl host cities are now Minneapolis (2018), Atlanta (2019), Miami (2020), Tampa (2021), and Los Angeles (2022).
