The Yankees Bring The Red Sox Back To Reality

We were all pretty excited about the Boston Red Sox prior to their opening game of a three-game series against the New York Yankees.  Prior to that game they had won eight of their last ten games and skyrocketed from 33/1 odds to win the World Series to 12/1. However, their 5-1 loss against the Yanks may prove to be their reality check.

Michael Pineda was on point, holding Boston to  seven hits and a run while walking none and striking out six. Over 6 2/3 innings, Pineda threw 89 pitches, 68 of them for strikes.

Clay Buchholz would leave the game with an injury shortly after Alex Rodriguez hit a solo homer.

It was the fourth inning that officially closed the books on Boston when the Yankees took a 4-0 lead. The Red Sox made two errors in that inning.

Pineda kept Boston’s offense silent with the exception of a Mookie Betts homer in the fifth inning.

The win allowed the Yankees to put some more distance between themselves and all the teams in the AL East who are three to four games behind them now with the exception of Boston who now sit 6.5 games back from the top spot. The win also gave New York their third consecutive win.

The Red Sox are playing from behind and the disheartening loss will not do them any favors at the books. However, the series still has two game and the possibility exists that they can get back on track.
