Tiger Woods Will Not Compete at U.S. Open Next Week
On Tuesday Tiger Woods announced via his website that he will be unable to compete in next week’s U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania. Woods has three career wins at the U.S. Open, but this marks the third time in the last six years he will miss the tournament.
While I continue to work hard on getting healthy, I am not physically ready to play in this year’s U.S. Open and the Quicken Loans National. I am making progress, but I’m not yet ready for tournament competition.
I want to thank everyone for their continued support. The positive texts, emails and calls I have received have been incredible. I want to wish Mike Davis, Diana Murphy, the USGA, the players and everyone at Oakmont a very successful week.
I will be hosting and attending my foundation’s tournament, the Quicken Loans National, at Congressional. It’s the 10th year of our tournament, and we continue to support the community, the military and the programs of the Tiger Woods Foundation.
Still recovering from two back surgeries he underwent last fall, Woods hasn’t competed since finishing 10th at the Wyndham Championship last August. Having already missed the Masters in April, this will be the second straight major without the man who has 79 PGA Tour titles.
Though it’s not shocking Woods wouldn’t be eager to rush back for the U.S. Open—Oakmont is among the most grueling courses in the country—his inability to compete at the Quicken Loans National is, at the very least, a mild surprise.
With no clear comeback target in sight, there now seems to be a very real chance Woods, who turned 40 in December, may miss the entire PGA season.
