Trump’s Odds Drop on Impeachment
Whether you like him or not, Donald Trump’s presidency so far has been full of turmoil and excitement. There haven’t been many dull moments since Trump took office. That’s either a good thing or a bad thing depending on your political party. But his latest move has shaken things up in Washington D.C. quite a bit. His firing of F.B.I. Director James Comey made waves that reached across party lines.
Comey was leading the investigation into Trump’s Russia ties and it’s not often a president has canned an F.B.I. director. Bill Clinton’s 1993 firing of William Sessions is the only other time it has happened.
It didn’t take sportsbooks long to get into the action. Knowing a good wagering opportunity when they see it, several are now offering odds on what happens to Trump. The most popular of these sportsbooks is Bovada, which is offering several different wagers on Trump’s fate.
The first bet is when Trump leaves office, with four possible wagers:
2017 +350
2018 +400
2019 +450
2020 or later: -120
Obviously, this wager is expecting Trump to be around until the end of his first term, if not longer.
The next bets is if Trump will serve a full term, with Yes having dropped to -130 and the no being at even money. But then things begin to get interesting.
Will Donald Trump be impeached by the House in his first term is a betting possibility. But you can only wager on the yes at +125.
Even impeachment doesn’t mean that Trump will be out of office, as was seen when Clinton was impeached. If a president is impeached by the House, he still has to be found guilty by the Senate. And that takes a two-thirds majority, which is unlikely to happen in a Republican-controlled Senate. Again, you can only bet on the yes. But this time you’ll get +400 for a correct wager.
