Detroit Lions Fans Rank First in Spelling and Grammar, Redskins Last
Is your trash talk on the wane? Are you sick of bringing up the same stale jokes every time you enter a good-natured roasting with strangers at the bar during commercial breaks? Well look no further, because a program has officially settled the age-old debate of whose team has the more literate fans.
Grammarly, an automated proofreading company, has ranked each NFL fan base on its grammar, punctuation and spelling, with Detroit Lions fans coming out on top. The outcome is somewhat surprising considering that, in a socioeconomic sense, Detroit is still one of the country’s least prosperous cities, which typically breeds a lack of quality education.
The company ranked teams based on the number of mistakes made per 100 words typed, and sourced the sample size from 150 reader comments from the news section of each team’s website, with each comment a minimum of 50 words long. No mean feat, considering that online comment sections don’t always feature the most level headed discussion; a problem that’s compounded when the topic area is professional sport.
Regardless, Lions fans made only 4.2 mistakes per 100 words, with division rivals the Green Bay Packers coming in second at a respectable 5.1 mistakes. The top third is incredibly clustered, with Colts and Bears fans rounding up the first 11 with only 6 mistakes each. The Saints finished 31st, with 12.4 mistakes, while an enormous drop off featured the Redskins dead last, at a whopping 16.5.
We wouldn’t want to make any unfair generalizations, so considering it’s in Washington, we’ll just chalk that one up to stupid politicians making comments incognito.
